Kanzi le singe aux mille mots, c'était le nom de l'émission-reportage qui m'a fait découvrir il y a bien longtemps déjà et avec émerveillement, Kanzi qui signifie « trésor » en swahili, et qui est le bonobo probablement le plus célèbre : cet étonnant singe qui peut comprendre et utiliser des symboles abstraits pour communiquer avec les humains.
Le Dr. Sue Savage-Rumbaugh du Georgia State University's Language Research Center ( LRC ), ici aux US, à l'origine de ce programme de langage utilisant des lexigrammes, entrainait la mère adoptive de Kanzi ( une femelle Bonobo : "Matata" ), alors que celui-ci était petit et pas concerné par cet apprentissage. Jusqu'à ce que les chercheurs se rendent compte que Kanzi simplement en écoutant, en savait beaucoup plus que sa mère et avait appris tout naturellement tous les mots ou lexigrammes du tableau.
En fait, né en octobre 1980, Kanzi est maintenant un grand adulte qui connait près de 500 symboles abstraits mais comprend près de 3000 mots de la conversation courante et peut répondre au téléphone. Cette compréhension ne concerne pas seulement les mots isolés, mais surtout leur succession ordonnée dans des enchaînements complexes. Il peut manipuler un clavier et un joystick pour réaliser des tâches informatisées.
Il peut aussi, si on lui donne des allumettes faire du feu en allumant des brindilles, il peut surveiller des aliments sur une cuisinière. Il peut fabriquer un outil en cassant et taillant une pierre ( et peut d'ailleurs enseigner ce geste à ses congénères ) et utilisant le bord aiguisé peut couper une corde lui permettant de récupérer une friandise.

Kanzi est le leader de sa communauté, leader étonnant toujours, avec ce regard si spécial, aux yeux graves et enfoncés profondément dans les orbites, cet air paisible de vieux sage. Pas beaucoup de différence avec l'Homo sapiens, réellement !

KANZI THE MONKEY WITH THE THOUSAND WORDS

" Kanzi, the monkey with the thousand words", was the title of the documentary which made me discover a long time ago already, full of amazement, Kanzi, wich means "treasure" in swahili, and who probably is the most famous bonobo ape : this astonishing monkey can understand and use abstract symbols to communicate with humans ones.

Dr. Sue Savage-Rumbaugh of Georgia State University' S Language Research Center (LRC), in the US, who originated this language program using lexigrams, was training Kanzi's adoptive mother ( Tamata a Bonobo female ), while the small Kanzi was not concerned by this training. That is, until the researchers realized that Kanzi had learned, simply by listening, so much more than his mother and had quite naturally learned all the words or lexigrams of the table.

As a matter of fact Kanzi, born in October 1980, is now a large adult who knows nearly 500 abstract symbols and understands nearly 3000 words of informal conversations and can even answer the telephone. This understanding does not apply to the single words only, even more so to their ordered succession in complex sequences.
He can handle a keyboard and a joystick to carry out computerized tasks.
He can also, if one gives him matches to make fire by lighting brushwood, supervise food on a cooker.
He is able to manufacture a tool by breaking and cutting a stone (and can teach this gesture to his congeneric akin) and use the sharpened edge to cut a rope allowing him to obtain a delicacy.
Kanzi is the leader of his community, always an astonishing leader, with his O so special glare, serious eyes deeply inserted into their sockets, this peaceful expression of a wise old man.
Not much of a difference with Homo sapiens, actually !
