La nation américaine, comme les autres nations du monde, est le fruit de l'assemblage, de l'intégration, de l'assimilation de populations, de territoires, de cultures différentes. C'est ainsi qu'une nation se construit.
Et pour cimenter et fédérer tous ces éléments souvent disparates, quoi de mieux que des symboles en général faciles à reconnaitre, et que tous saluent et respectent.
Et de très loin le plus important, le plus brandi et le plus profondément enfoui au coeur du peuple : son drapeau.
Et aux Etats-Unis ce ne sont pas les drapeaux qui manquent et je dois dire que j'adore voir ces immenses bannières, avec étoiles et rayures, flotter partout, proclamer partout qu'on se trouve en terre américaine. Quand on aime vraiment ce pays, c'est un véritable bonheur. On sait qu'on est en terre de Courage avec un grand C et de Liberté avec un grand L.
Et le drapeau des Etats-Unis d'Amérique, ce "Stars and Stripes", cette "Star Spangled Banner", devenu le titre de l'hymne national américain ou "the Old Glory", c'est le drapeau des USA dans sa version actuelle, où l'on retrouve :
- Les 13 bandes rouges et blanches, qui symbolisent les premières colonies de la côte Est, qui se sont révoltées contre l'Angleterre ( il n'y en avait que 13 à l'origine, le reste du territoire étant encore sauvage et inexploré en grande partie ).
- Les 50 étoiles sur fond bleu, qui représentent les 50 Etats qui se sont créés au fur et à mesure, après l'indépendance de 1776.
Et ne nous y trompons pas, c'est notre ENNEMI, celui qui ne respecte pas notre drapeau !
Associé au drapeau, l'hymne national le "Star Spangled Banner" :
Pour les autres symboles des US, ils résultent en général de faits historiques marquants ou de caractéristiques ou d'objets usuels de certains éléments de la population. Et ils évoluent dans le temps ...
Pour les US, de nombreux symboles évoquent immédiatement cette grande contrée.
Symbole de la beauté, de la force et du prestige, cet aigle on ne le trouve plus, dit-on qu'en Alaska et en Floride. Il se trouve sur l'écusson de la Fédération US. A noter que Bald en l'occurence ne signifie pas Chauve mais Blanc en anglais ancien.
Cadeau de la France pour marquer le centenaire de la liberté des Américains conquise sur l'Angleterre en 1776.
Et de tous ces symboles que personnellement je chéris profondément, notre Lady Liberty est de loin celui que je préfère.
Personnage imaginaire qui tient son nom des initiales U.S. (United States) marquées sur les produits exportés.
- La Cloche de la Liberté ou Liberty bell
Cloche qui sonna le vote de l'Indépendance en 1776. Elle se trouve à Philadelphie.
Je voudrais rendre un hommage à Patrick Daudon, qui nous a quittés et qui avait beaucoup oeuvré pour qu'aboutisse le projet de la Normandy Liberty Bell.
Symbole de l'Américain à la conquête des terres vierges de l'Ouest - the western territory -
Ce gardien de troupeau de vaches se déplace désormais aussi en quad, en pick-up truck, et en hélicoptère !
Premiers occupants des terres d'Amérique du Nord, ils constituent les peuples autochtones ou les peuples natifs, constitués de toutes les tribus Navajos, Apaches et autres Sioux ... etc
- Le bison
L'animal sauvage par excellence dans l'Ouest, avec Buffalo Bill qui fut un de ses plus illustres chasseurs. Mais sa chasse effrénée à la fin du XIXe siècle, ajoutée aux épidémies de brucellose importée d'Europe, a failli mener à la disparition complète de cette espèce, devenue depuis une espèce protégée.
- Le Stetson
Ce chapeau de cow-boy symbolise aujourd'hui les valeurs de fierté de la conquête de l'Ouest dans l'Amérique profonde ... et le Texan dans toute sa splendeur. Et notre cher W.
- L'éléphant
Qui représente le Parti Républicain.
- L'âne
Qui représente le Parti Démocrate.
- La batte de base-ball :
Le sport national.

AMERICAN SYMBOLS
The American nation, like all nations worldwide, is a product of the assembly, integration and assimilation of different populations, territories and cultures. This is how a nation is built.
And to cement and federate all these - often disparate - elements, what better than to use symbols, generally easy to recognize, that each and everyone greets and respects ?
And by far the most important, the most brandished and the most deeply rooted in the heart of the people: its flag.
And in the United States, you just can't miss flags and I have to say I just love seeing those huge banners, loaded with stars and stripes, floating everywhere, declaring everywhere that you are on American ground. When one really appreciates this country, it is a genuine blessing. You know you're in a land of Courage and Freedom with capital C and F respectively.
And the flag of the United States of America, the "Stars and Stripes", the "Star Spangled Banner", having become the title of the American National Anthem, also known as "Old Glory", is the flag of the USA in its current version with :
- 13 red and white stripes which symbolize the first colonies of the East coast, which revolted against England ( there were only 13 in the beginning, the remainder being mainly still wild and unexplored territory at that time )
- 50 stars on a blue background which represent the 50 States which were created progressively, after the independence in 1776.
And let us make no mistake here : he/she who does not respect our flag, is our ENEMY !
Associated to the flag, the national anthem the "Star Spangled Banner".
The other american symbols generally result from outstanding historical facts or characteristics and usual objects of specific parts of the the population. And these evolve in time...
For the US, many symbols directly evoke this great region.
- The bald or white headed Eagle
Symbol of beauty, strength and prestige, this eagle which can only found be in Alaska and Florida these days. He is represented on the heraldry of the US Federation.
- The Statue of Liberty
Gift from France to commemorate the century of the freedom the Americans conquered over England in 1776. And of all those symbols that I personally cherish deeply, Lady Liberty is by far my favorite.
- Uncle Sam
Imaginary character whose name derived from the initials "U.S". (United States), displayed on exported products.
- The Bell of Freedom or Liberty Bell
The bell that tolled for the vote for Independence in 1776. It remains in Philadelphia.
I would like to pay a tribute to Patrick Daudon, who passed away recently and who had worked tremendously in order for the project "Normandy Liberty Bell to succeed.
- The Cow-boy
Symbol of the American conquest of the virgin lands of the West - the western territory - This guardian of herd of cows nowadays moves in a quad, a sound-blaring pick-up truck or even a helicopter !
- Indians
First humans on the grounds of North America, they constitute the native people : Navajos, Apaches, Sioux ... etc
- The bison
The best wildlife representative of the West, with Buffalo Bill, one of its most famous hunters. But the unrestrained hunting of this animal, towards the end of the XIXth century, as well as the epidemics of brucellosis, imported from Europe, almost completely wiped out this species, which has since become a protected species.
- StetsonThis cow-boy hat symbolizes today the values of pride in the conquest of the West in grassroot America ... and for the traditional representative Texan. And our beloved W.
- The Elephant : Represents the Republican Party.
- The Donkey : Represents the Democratic Party.
- Baseball bat : The national sport.
