C'est ainsi que les Américains surnomment affectueusement et sans aucunement vouloir manquer de respect leur drapeau, emblême national au même titre que Lady Liberty ( la Statue bien sûr ) et la Cloche de la Liberte, fendue et préservée.
Mais le drapeau Américain est beaucoup plus qu'un symbole de la nation, qui peut sembler parfois proche d'une certaine nostalgie du passé. Il est symbolique de tout ce qui représente les Etats-Unis, de la volonté d'établir une nation libérée du joug de la couronne Britannique, à celle de faire face à la délicate question de l'esclavage, quitte à devoir tuer ses propres compatriotes dans la guerre la plus meurtrière que cette nation ait connu. Chaque fois que je passe sous une bannière étoilée, plus elle est grande, plus elle s'étend au vent et mieux je me sens. C'est un peu comme si de George Washington à George Walker Bush, en passant par Abraham Lincoln, tous vous saluent et vous insufflent courage, détermination, mais aussi compassion, volonté d'acier de progrés et d'émancipation de tout et pour tous.
Il existe toute une étiquette pour déployer, mais aussi pour (dé)plier le drapeau. Et il existe aussi une cérémonie de mise à la retraite pour les drapeaux déchirés et usés, un peu comme un remerciement pour services rendus à la nation. Cette année il y aura dans la jolie ville de Indian Rocks Beach en Floride une cérémonie de Mise a la Retraite du Drapeau le 14 juin prochain (Clearwater Gazette) et tous sont invités à y amener leurs drapeaux usés.
On comprend dès lors mieux, qu'en brûlant un drapeau americain, on s'attaque à beaucoup plus qu'à une étoffe colorée. Et les Américains qui le font ostensiblement, à grands renforts de publicité, brulent et piétinnent en fait leur propre pays ce faisant et tous les nobles idéaux qu'il résume en un seul symbole. Et oui, en France on siffle la Marseillaise - je ne suis pas certain d'ailleurs qu'on puisse encore redresser la barre pour ce qu'il reste de ce pays-là-, et aux US on brûle un drapeau. Mais les détracteurs de la liberté, du progrés, les abrutis égoïstes incapables de reconnaître les dons et les bienfaits de la patrie qui les accueille et dans laquelle ils vivent, sont tous semblables, malheureusement. En général ils sont envieux, jaloux, paresseux, intolérants, souvent violents. Et la plupart du temps leur horizon politique n'est qu'un intervalle mathématique allant de l'extrême gauche à la gauche démocrate.
Moi personnellement je vais me faire plaisir avec une orgie de drapeaux Américains, des vrais qui ont servi, le 14 juin prochain et je dégusterai les rafraichissements gracieusement offerts par la mairie ...

That is how Americans affectionately call their flag, with all due respect though, as much a national emblem as Lady liberty and the Liberty Bell, the cracked but preserved one.
But the American flag represents much more than a somewhat nostalgic symbolism. It is the symbol of everything that the United States of America represents, from the will to establish a nation free of Great Britain's domination to the decision to face the problem of slavery even if that meant killing one's fellow countrymen in the most murderous war that this nation has undergone. Each and every time that I cross a star spangled banner, the bigger it is, the more it is displayed by the wind, the better I feel. It's just as if all americans, from George Washington to George Walker bush, without forgetting Abraham Lincoln, all salute you and inspire you courage, determination, but also compassion and iron-strong will of progress and emancipation for everybody, from everything.
There is a whole etiquette for displaying, but also (un)folding the flag. and so there exists a Flag Retirement Ceremony too for torn and tattered flags, after good services rendered to the nation. This year in the pretty city of Indian Rocks Beach, Florida, there will be a Flag Retirement Ceremony at Indian Rocks Beach ( the Clearwater Gazette ), on the 14th of june and everybody can bring his used flag.
Thus, one can understand that when people burn the flag, they agress much more than a piece of colored cloth. And the americans that do it obviously, with great publicity, burn and trample their own country by so doing as well as all the noble ideals that it stands for, summarized in one symbol. Much like in France nowadays you have people whistling to protest when "the Marseillaise" is sung (the national anthem) - I'm not positive by the way that one can turn the wheel in what's left of that country, in the USA they burn the flag. But those who despise liberty, progress, the selfish morons unable to aknowledge the gifts and blessings of the the homeland that welcomes them and on the soil of which they live, are all the same unfortunately. Usually they are envious, jealous, lazy, untolerant and often violent. And most of the time their political horizon is like a mathematical gap from extreme left to liberal.
I, personnally, will treat myself to an orgy of American flags, real ones, that served, on june 14th while enjoying the refreshments graciously offered by the City Hall ...
